Jan Vertonghen injury: Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino unable to confirm whether defender will be fit for Bournemouth clash

Mauricio Pochettino is still unable to confirm if Jan Vertonghen will be able to play against Bournemouth after the Tottenham defender’s worrying head injury.

Vertonghen, the Belgium international, was withdrawn from Spurs’ Champions League semi-final first leg defeat by Ajax on Tuesday after clashing heads with centre-back partner Toby Alderweireld.

The 32-year-old saw a neurologist on Thursday to discover the extent of the injury, though Pochettino remains in the dark ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to the south coast.

The Spurs manager said: “Today was his appointment with the specialist and we still haven’t seen the report.

“After the game was good, he was more relaxed and felt better. Now we need to see the report from the specialist.

“We don’t know [if he can face Bournemouth], we need to wait. That is going to be a decision from the medical staff. We cannot guess now.

“We hope it is not a big issue and he is available soon.”

The handling of Vertonghen’s injury has been criticised and Pochettino said he was open to a change in football’s concussion protocol rules.

Brain injury charity Headway called for the introduction of ‘temporary concussion substitutions‘ in the wake of Tuesday’s incident.

Pochettino continued: “Always in that situation I am open, more than open, to improve the decisions. I think the most important think was going to be the health of the player.

“It is not important, the game, the semi-final of the Champions League, the score, the priority is the player.

Joao Felix: Manchester United transfer target nets another goal and celebrates with his ball boy brother

Manchester United transfer target Joao Felix isn’t showing any signs of complacency as his breakthrough season continues.

The Benfica wonderkid is racking up goals and assists at a break-neck pace, ignoring his new-found fame – and the fact the ladies appear to love him to as he refuses to acknowledge the nudes he gets sent.

Joao Felix strikes the ball against Vitoria de Setubal

The interest in Felix has ramped up over the last few days following his hat-trick in the Europa League quarter-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt, where he became the youngest ever to perform the feat.

And on Sunday the masterful 19-year-old thrilled those at the Estadio da Luz, including plenty of scouts, as he made two assists and then scored a brilliant third to help the Portuguese giants to a 4-2 victory over Vitoria de Setubal in the Primeira Division.

And he celebrated his own strike in style two, first of all giving us his version of Kylian Mbappe’s crossed arms before then embracing his 16-year-old brother Hugo – part of the Benfica academy, who happened to be standing behind the goal he scored, performing ball boy duties.

You can see the clip below.

Man United are one of a host of top European sides keen on Felix, with Juventus also interested, while Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly scouting the player heavily.

He would, though, cost any club a sizeable sum thanks to his €120million release clause, which Benfica wish to increase.

Meanwhile, club president Luis Filipe Vieira has said selling the prodigy right now isn’t essential.

Right now we are not interested in selling Joao Felix, and soon we will increase his release clause,” Vieira told Tuttosport.

“He is one of the best products to have emerged from Portuguese football since Cristiano Ronaldo.”

‘Everton need another top striker to compete in the top six’, says former manager Sam Allardyce

Everton may have proven their attacking potential in Sunday̢۪s 4-0 victory over Manchester United, but Sam Allardyce believes they still need to sign a top striker to break into the Premier League̢۪s top six.

The Toffees produced perhaps their best performance of the season as they thrashed the Red Devils at Goodison Park, with four different players on the scoresheet.

Theo Walcott celebrates with Everton with team-mates after scoring their fourth goal against Man United

Brazilian ace Richarlison showed once again why he is Marco Silva̢۪s main man with a stunning overhead kick to open the scoring, with Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott subjecting a downbeat United to their fifth straight defeat away from home.

The victory lifted Everton up to seventh place, although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer̢۪s side are 15 points ahead in sixth.

Still, it̢۪s progress for the Merseyside club, although former manager Allardyce believes the Toffees need more firepower to really start challenging with the Premier League̢۪s top sides.

Richarlison’s superb overhead kick gave Everton the lead

â€Å“Everton were fantastic against Manchester United and it’s really put them on a high to end the season,” he said on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

â€Å“But, if you look at where Everton need to be, they need another top centre forward.

â€Å“If you want to finish in the top six, which is what Everton fans are sort of demanding at the moment, then they need to find a striker who is going to get 15 or 20 goals a season.

â€Å“And not only is that a hard job, it’s one of the most expensive jobs in the game today.”

But, Big Sam has given a glowing assessment of young striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and hopes he can start leading the line for the Toffees next season.

The 22-year-old has established himself as a regular in the Everton side this term and ahead of the United clash, he even said he is confident he will soon be ‘competing alongside Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane’.

The forward has scored just 17 goals in 90 appearances for the Toffees so far, but Allardyce is expecting great things from the England Under-21 international.

He added: â€Å“Calvert-Lewin has improved immensely this season and next season he might even improve yet again.

â€Å“I think he’s a quality player, but he’s still a little short on his goal tally to command that centre forward position on a regular basis.

â€Å“But he may do it next season.”

Former Everton manager Sam Allardyce was back on the media circuit last weekend discussing Everton's performance against Manchester United at Goodison Park. With a comfortable 4-0 scoreline on the day following goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott, Allardyce told Talksport that in his opinion, if Everton were to break into the Premier League top six in the

Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and the Europa League Team of the Tournament as selected by talkSPORT

The Europa League hasn’t failed to excite this season.

For the first time since the UEFA Cup became the Europa League in the 2009/10 season, the final will be contested by two clubs from England, with Arsenal and Chelsea set to battle it out in Baku to earn some silverware after a gruelling season – live on talkSPORT.

Sarri and Emery’s sides will battle it out in Baku

Sarri and Emery’s sides will battle it out in Baku

There is a lot more at stake for the Gunners, however, as a win would ensure they play in next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea have already secured their destiny following their third place finish in the Premier League.

But ahead of the Europa League final, talkSPORT.com has given its verdict on the Team of the Tournament.

GOALKEEPER

Chelsea no.1 KEPA ARRIZABALAGA has had an impressive debut season and was instrumental in the Blues’ run to the final.

Not only was he the hero in the semi-final penalty shoot-out win against Eintracht Frankfurt, but he has saved Chelsea’s blushes on many occasions throughout their European campaign.

DEFENDERS

Chelsea defender ANDREAS CHRISTENSEN has had a very solid campaign in the Europa League.

The Dane has played nearly every minute of the Blues’ run to the final and has helped Chelsea keep seven clean sheets, the most in the competition.

Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back MARTIN HINTEREGGER has been mightily impressive for the German side this campaign, particularly against Chelsea in the semi.

Most of Andreas Christensen’s playing time has come through cup games this season

5

Most of Andreas Christensen’s playing time has come through cup games this season

He put in a series of good blocks and last ditch challenges to keep the Blues at bay and he has been doing this all campaign for his side.

Valencia defender EZEQUIEL GARAY has been imperious in defence for his side this tournament.

Although his club began the season in the Champions League he has been crucial for them on their run to the semi-finals, although he was ultimately unable to prevent Arsenal’s lethal strike force in the last round.

MIDFIELDERS

Frankfurt’s SEBASTIAN RODE worked tirelessly to keep Chelsea at bay in the last four and he was desperately unlucky his efforts were not rewarded.

He has been solid as rock throughout the campaign for his club in both attack and defence and looks a real dime in the midfield.

Chelsea playmaker RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK will be heartbroken he is not playing in the final following the Achilles tendon injury he picked up in a post-season friendly in Boston.

Loftus-Cheek has been Chelsea’s star in the Europa League this season

The Englishman has arguably been the Blues’ best performer in the Europa League this term, chipping in with four crucial goals to send his side to the final.

Valencia midfielder DANIEL PAREJO has also been the main orchestrator in the Valencia line-up, puling the strings at the heart of the midfield to keep play ticking over for his side.

FORWARDS

There has been so many outstanding forwards in the Europa League that is it is extremely difficult to fit them all in.

Sevilla forward WISSAM BEN YEDDER has been on stellar form in Europe, notching up eight goals throughout the campaign to help his side to the quarter-finals.

Arsenal striker PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG – also on eight goals – has often been played on the left throughout the tournament and he was outstanding in their last match against Valencia, almost single-handedly sending the Gunners to Baku with a hat-trick.

Jovic has been tremendous for Frankurt this term

Jovic has been tremendous for Frankurt this term

LUKA JOVIC has been incredible for Eintracht Frankfurt this term and he looks to be off to Real Madrid for his stellar displays.

Along with OLIVIER GIROUD, who completes the line-up, they are the top scoring players in the Europa League this season with 10 goals.

The Frenchman has been a handful for opposition defences in Europe throughout the campaign, scoring some stunning goals in the process.

Have a look at the line-up in full below…

Pele: Brazil World Cup legend admitted to hospital in Paris, but condition not life-threatening – reports

World Cup legend Pele has been admitted to hospital, reports in France claim.

RMC Sport in the country say the former Brazil star had a ‘tetanus crisis’ and a fever overnight, though his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

The 78-year-old was in Paris at a sponsor’s event where he met Kylian Mbappe and the Paris Saint-Germain striker’s family.

Mbappe, who was 19 when he won the World Cup with France last summer, was two years older than when Pele picked up the first of his three victories in the competition i 1958.

In total he scored 77 times in 92 games for Brazil, winning the World Cup again in 1962 and 1970.

Pele, whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. He spent his entire career with Santos in his native Brazil, retiring in 1974, before a brief stint at New York Cosmos.

During his career, he claimed to have scored 1,025 goals and backed Mbappe to do the same, not that the current star of football holds much hope of reaching the milestone.

“I think that even if we count the goals on inter-city pitches and goals on the PlayStation, I won’t be able to reach the 1,000-goal mark!” he said.

It is not the first time there have been concerns about his health. In 2016 he was the favourite to light the flame at the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics, but pulled out because of muscle pains, while he had also had surgery on his hip earlier in the year.

“I’m not in physical condition to take part in the opening ceremony,” he said at the time.

In January 2018, he was due to appear at a tribute dinner in London, but was unable to attend after collapsing due to severe exhaustion.
