West Brom 3-2 Birmingham: Jake Livermore strikes to give Baggies all three points in five-goal thriller

West Brom kept their automatic promotion hopes alive with a pulsating 3-2 Sky Bet Championship victory against Birmingham at The Hawthorns.

Albion twice trailed before Jake Livermore grabbed their winner 16 minutes from time to cut the gap to second-placed Sheffield United to four points, and hand City a fifth successive defeat.

Livermore scores with a superb strike

Gary Gardner gave Birmingham the lead after seven minutes in City’s first game since they were deducted nine points for breaching the Football League’s financial guidelines.

Albion equalised for the first time through Dwight Gayle’s 17th goal of the season in the 47th minute before Lukas Jutkiewicz ended a four-month goal drought to regain the lead for the visitors 12 minutes later.

It was short-lived as Jay Rodriguez drew Albion level again five minutes later from the penalty spot before Livermore struck the matchwinner.

The points deduction has plunged Birmingham into a relegation battle, with this latest loss leaving them five points clear of the drop zone ahead of the weekend fixtures involving their rivals.

In contrast, Albion have won all three of their games under caretaker manager Jimmy Shan, with a play-off place almost certainly on the cards.

Yet it was Birmingham who made a dream start, forcing three corners in quick succession, and it was from the third of those that they grabbed the opener, with Gardner heading home Connor Mahoney’s delivery from 12 yards.

Birmingham remained the more threatening side, with Albion requiring a last-ditch block from Ahmed Hegazi to deny Che Adams.

Birmingham are without a win in five matches

Sam Johnstone saved a Jutkiewicz header to keep them in touch at the break.

After riding their luck, Albion cashed in immediately at the start of the second-half.

Blues full-back Kristian Pedersen gave away a free-kick when he pulled back Mason Holgate, allowing Albion captain Chris Brunt to provide a perfect delivery for Gayle to rise in a crowded goalmouth to steer a header just inside the near post.

If Albion thought they would take control, battling Birmingham had other ideas as they again struck from a corner.

Rodriguez equalises from the spot

Another Mahoney delivery picked out Jutkiewicz at the back post to score his 11th goal of the season and first in 22 games.

After falling behind again, Albion’s response was a lot swifter second time around.

When full-back Conor Townsend was brought down on the edge of the area by Mahoney, leading to referee David Webb pointing to the spot, Rodriguez comfortably converted the penalty.

With Albion now dominant, Livermore scored what proved to be the winner, letting fly with a low drive after Michael Morrison and Dean had failed to clear a Gayle cross.

Wonder strike puts city in good Kompany

Wonder strike puts city in good Kompany

LONDON ̢ۢ Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said he ignored calls "not to shoot" from teammates as he fired in from long range to earn his side a crucial 1-0 Premier League win over Leicester City on Monday.
With Liverpool having reclaimed the top spot in the standings after their 3-2 win at Newcastle United last Saturday, City looked nervy as they reached the hour mark at the Etihad without scoring a goal.
The Belgium defender then came to the rescue with a stunning strike into the top corner in the 70th minute to score his first goal of the season and his first-ever from outside the box in the Premier League, to win the match for City.
After the victory, which put City on 95 points and one ahead of Liverpool after the penultimate match of the season, cameras caught striker Sergio Aguero jokingly telling his skipper: "I tell you no shoot! No! No!"
Kompany was undeterred.
"I haven't scored this season, but I always feel in big moments I can do something," he said.
"Headers, anything. There was a little bit of frustration today. I could hear people saying, 'Don't shoot'. It annoyed me. I've not come this far in my career to be told when I can and can't shoot.
"I've had 15 years of top-level midfielders telling me not to shoot, but I always told them one day I am going to have a shot from outside the box and I'm going to score a goal."
Forward Raheem Sterling was one of those who had his doubts.

SELF-BELIEF
I've had 15 years of top-level midfielders telling me not to shoot, but I always told them one day I am going to have a shot from outside the box and I'm going to score a goal.
VINCENT KOMPANY, Manchester City captain, on proving his doubters wrong about his ability to score from outside the box.

"My face screaming 'Noooo Vinny why u do this' so hard. what a hit boi!!! Captain Incredible," he wrote on Twitter.
City manager Pep Guardiola also praised Kompany for his wonder goal, saying: "Sometimes, you need a goal like Vinnie's today."
It was certainly a goal worthy of settling the Premier League title race this season. What happened in the 70th minute will long be remembered by City fans, and may haunt Liverpool for some time to come.
Leicester had been defending so strongly, with Wilfred Ndidi immense in shielding his back four, yet City never betrayed any nerves. They kept pouring forward, with the defenders joining the attack, too.
When Aymeric Laporte laid the ball off towards his central-defensive partner 30m out, Kompany took a touch and decided to push on, encouraged by Leicester's momentary decision to back off.
The Belgian took another touch and then connected powerfully with a strike that burned its way through the chilly Manchester air, flying in high past the diving goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
City had known Leicester would be organised and determined. Brendan Rodgers' side played deep, with even the lone striker Jamie Vardy dropping back into Leicester's defensive third at times.
The look of sheer joy on Bernardo Silva's face as he ran towards Kompany summed up City's gritty win.
Guardiola was also asked about the significance of Kompany being on the pitch at the end with his children and if it signalled the last home game of an 11-year City career.
"Kompany has been here for more than 10 years and he has helped with an incredible generation of players," the Spaniard said.
"With other players like (Joe) Hart and (Pablo) Zabaleta, they created this club. This club is what it is because of people like Vincent.
"We spoke with him and his agent. We are going to take a beer together (at the end of the season) and decide what is best."
City have one hand on the Premier League trophy but Guardiola hit back at Liverpool, claiming that the Reds are playing "without pressure".
Ahead of Sunday's final-day fixture at Brighton, he suggested that the pressure has been weighing heavier on the shoulders of his players despite both teams going neck and neck in the title race.
"Liverpool play without pressure because they know it is not in their hands. It is easy," he said. "We have the pressure."

Gareth Bale future: 91 per cent of Real Madrid fans vote for Welshman to leave LaLiga giants

Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid future appears to be hanging by a thread.

The Welshman has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu with manager Zinedine Zidane even refusing to bring him off the bench as they slumped to a defeat at home to Real Betis last week.

Bale has had to get used to life on the bench especially after Zidane’s return as Real Madrid manager

Bale is on a whopping £650,000-a-week contract but it’s understood Los Blancos are desperate to get him off the wage bill as they look to revamp their attacking options this summer.

And it looks as though supporters are desperate to see the 29-year-old go too.

Spanish newspaper AS ran a poll giving Real fans their verdict on each player and whether they should stay or leave.

Almost five million took part in the survey and only nine per cent believe Bale should stay at Real.

Mariano Diaz, Zidane’s son Luca, Dani Ceballos and Isco were also urged to go. Meanwhile, Dani Caravajal, Vinicius Jr, Sergio Ramos, Brahim Diaz and Alvaro Odriozola were the top five players the fans want to see stay.

Bale went straight down the tunnel following Zidane’s latest snub on Sunday and did not wave goodbye to the Bernabeu crowd because ‘he has no plans to leave Real Madrid this summer’, according to reports in Spain.

Marca wrote on Tuesday, Bale ‘did not say goodbye to anyone; not his team-mates, not the coaching fans, nor the supporters because he has no plans to leave.

Bale reportedly told his team-mates that he’ll be happy to stay and ‘play golf’ next season if he’s not selected to play, according to Spanish radio station Radioestaio.

“I’ve got three years left on my contract,” he said.

“If they want me to go, they’ll need to pay me £15m per season. If not, I’ll stay here. And if I have to play golf, I will.”

Christian Eriksen transfer latest: Real Madrid reportedly turn attention to Paul Pogba and Eden Hazard as interest in Spurs star cools

Tottenham’s hopes of keeping Christian Eriksen have improved as Real Madrid will reportedly focus their attentions on signing Paul Pogba and Eden Hazard instead.

The 27-year-old playmaker has one year left on a contract that earns him a reported £70,000-a-week.

Eriksen, who has a year left on his contract, could remain at Tottenham rather than move to Real Madrid

Real do not want to push to sign Eriksen because of their reluctance to negotiate with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, The Times say.

It is thought their experience of dealing with him when signing Gareth Bale in 2013 is still fresh in the mind. Bale eventually moved on transfer deadline day for a record £85million despite Real opening talks with Tottenham months earlier.

Eriksen is valued at about £60m, but it’s thought signing Hazard and Pogba from Chelsea and Manchester United respectively could cost more than £200m.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful the two parties can open discussions on a new contract in the summer.

â€Å“I hope and wish Christian can be with us in the future,” he said after Eriksen’s goal earned Spurs a 1-0 win against Brighton to strengthen their grip on third place.

â€Å“I think Christian and us, we are so open to talk and we will see what happens. It’s a situation that’s a very special one and Christian is a special person. The timing for him or for the club to be agreeing something is maybe different to another player.

Liverpool narrowly missed out on the Premier League title and, after suffering defeat in Kiev last season, feel they deserve silverware for their exploits this season.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s resilient side are not here to make up the numbers in just the second all-English Champions League Final.

Spurs have defied the odds and battled back time and time again from adversity to reach Madrid, with their semi-final victory against Ajax a testament to their fortitude.

But they will have to do something they have never managed in their history in order to lift the famous trophy.

Matthijs De Ligt’s future is yet to be resolved – with Manchester United not giving up hope of signing the Ajax skipper

However, according to Spanish publication Sport, United are ready to fight off that interest by offering the talented youngster a contract worth £12.3million-a-year.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his defensive ranks after a miserable season for the Red Devils, and views De Ligt as the ideal man to give his side a much-needed boost.

This latest development comes after it emerged that discussions between Barcelona and De Ligt had hit a stumbling block.

Barca met with De Ligt and his world renowned agent Mino Raiola last month, where they reportedly agreed a deal which satisfied all parties.

However, Sport claim that the Ajax man is having second thoughts over the move, and is demanding a better financial package than is currently on the table.

Bayern Munich and Juventus are among the other side mooted with an interest in De Ligt, whose preferred move is believed to be the Nou Camp.

However, with negotiations over a transfer now hitting a sticking point, United are now in pole position to hijack that deal and pull off, what would be, one of the most impressive signings of the 2019 summer transfer window.
