'They're brilliant': Liverpool fans line streets to honour idols

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Under leaden English skies, Liverpool became a carnival of red on Sunday as the football-mad city hailed its heroes for bringing home the Champions League trophy for the first time in 14 years.
"We're just so excited," said Tina Taylor, 51, as she joined tens of thousands of locals thronging the city's streets to watch the team parade Europe's top football prize from an open-top bus.
"It's so uplifting for the city, bringing everybody together," she added, decked out in a red Liverpool shirt and scarf alongside her husband and son, as the team bus neared their vantage point in the suburb of Mossley Hill.
Moments later the double-decker, emblazoned with "Champions of Europe", rolled by with the famous silver trophy being hoisted aloft by bouncing Liverpool players amid red flare smoke, confetti and wild cheers.
The club claimed the European crown for the sixth time Saturday night in Madrid with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in only the second ever all-English final.
It followed an epic season in which Liverpool narrowly missed out on a first league title in three decades, causing agony - now somewhat relieved - for fans impatient to end the long wait.
"What a day - what a weekend! Imagine lifting that cup," said 78-year-old Stan Evans, a lifelong local fan who looked out of a first-floor pub window as star striker player Mohamed Salah held it aloft just below his gaze.
Evans could recall cheering all five of Liverpool's previous European Cup triumphs, starting in 1977, when they beat Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final in Rome.
"This is just as good because I never thought we'd see another one in my lifetime," he added.

'I MIGHT CRY AGAIN'

Celebrations ran late into the night in Liverpool city centre, as ecstatic supporters danced drunkenly in the streets singing a repertoire of the club's anthems.
The morning after, bleary-eyed fans began streaming back onto the streets ahead of the parade, which worked its way slowly towards the city centre.
"I'm ecstatic and hungover at the same time - the best type of hangover," said Peter Broad, 37, a social housing worker and Liverpool native.

"I might cry again," he added, flag in hand.
"It's emotional - it means so much to you just to win. Liverpool's a very European city, it's always been outward-looking," Broad explained.
Thousands of fans lined the roads east of the city centre, while children climbed atop bus stops for a better view, as the bus - preceded by a booming sound stage - made its way.
A jubilant atmosphere rippled through the city, as all manner of Liverpool flags flew from buildings and cars, drivers sounded horns and fans carried everything from banners to balloon replicas of the trophy.
Aleisha Tipton, 23, from nearby Cheshire, staked out a prime spot near the waterfront end-point.
"We don't care about waiting all afternoon to see them," she said of her heroes as light rain started to fall.
"It can rain all day, we don't care!" She was wearing a commemorative scarf from 2005, when Liverpool last won the competition in a memorable come-from-behind victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.
"This time is better for me as I was only nine then."
For her granddad Ken Jones, 79, this Liverpool team is up there with the best he has seen.
"They're brilliant," he said. "I don't think they could replace them with anything better."

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Why Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri should be lauded for treatment of winger

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Why Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri should be lauded for treatment of winger

If Chelsea fans weren’t so busy waiting to boo Jorginho, they might realise that Maurizio Sarri has finally given them what they’ve wanted for years.

In a turbulent decade at Stamford Bridge, one thing has remained the same: Chelsea’s utter refusal to use any talent produced by their world class academy.

Hudson-Odoi is the youngest ever Chelsea player to start four consecutive Premier League games

3

Hudson-Odoi is the youngest ever Chelsea player to start four consecutive Premier League games

Bright futures have ultimately been destined to fade away during never ending loan spells, with Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Chalobah eventually giving up.

But things are different this season. On Monday night, 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi and 23-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek made their fourth consecutive starts in the Premier League during the 2-2 draw with Burnley.

Yet, the overwhelming feeling among the Chelsea faithful seems to be that it took too long. After all, Hudson-Odoi only started his first top flight game earlier this month, despite already becoming a full England international beforehand.

His season suffered a cruel end against Burnley when he ruptured his Achilles on Monday night, but when the teenager reflects on his rise to stardom this term, he’ll have Sarri to thank.

The Italian isn’t winning any popularity contests at Chelsea, and it would’ve been easy to give in to fans’ pleas and start Hudson-Odoi prematurely.

Pressure grew when the youngster handed in a transfer request amid interest from Bayern Munich, but still, Sarri continued to slowly ease the forward into the team.

Hudson-Odoi’s season is over

3

Hudson-Odoi’s season is over

This is how you should do it, right? He’s 18, what’s the rush?

When you’ve got Willian, Pedro and Eden Hazard ahead of you, any first-team opportunity is a blessing.

He developed and grew in confidence with each Europa League appearance and every cameo from the bench, until he was ready.

In his press conferences, Sarri always offered perspective and compared Hudson-Odoi’s game time to other teenagers across Europe, and he was right.

Contrary to popular belief, there’s aren’t actually many 18-year-olds running around Europe’s top clubs every week. It’s not the norm. Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon is the only player under the age of 19 to start more Premier League games than Hudson-Odoi this season.

Don’t be fooled, Jadon Sancho’s breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund doesn’t suddenly make Germany the place to go for youth. Sancho, 19, played a similar role to Hudson-Odoi last season before emerging as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents a year later.

It certainly doesn’t make Bayern Munich the right destination for Hudson-Odoi. They aren’t exactly champions of youth. This is a club which lost Douglas Costa because they preferred to pick Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Why would Hudson-Odoi leave? As a youngster, he has discovered a rarity: a Chelsea manager who trusts him.

It’s worth noting the talented teen hasn’t set the world alight during this spell of games, especially against Liverpool at Anfield, but Sarri stuck with him anyway.

Besides, with doubt surrounding the future of Eden Hazard; Willian and Pedro both in their thirties; and Chelsea’s transfer ban – the window of opportunity could not be wider.

Sarri has shown an admirable sense of calm and rationality among the Hudson-Odoi hysteria to carefully manage the youngster’s development – and for that, he deserves credit.

Fifa backs 48-team World Cup in 2022

MIAMI (AFP) - Fifa moved a step closer on Friday (March 15) to expanding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams and hopes to confirm the plans in June if a suitable co-host can be found.
An internal feasibility study supporting the expansion, which is being strongly pushed by president Gianni Infantino, was given full backing by the Fifa council in Miami.
A final decision will now be taken in Paris on June 6 after Fifa and Qatar jointly submit the names of potential co-host nations to the governing body's Congress.
Infantino, who also confirmed a new Club World Cup with 24 teams will begin in 2021 to replace the Confederations Cup, told a press conference: "You have in front of you a happy Fifa president.
"I am always happy but especially today because we have taken some important decisions.
"We came to conclusion, yes it's feasible to move from 32 to 48 teams at the World Cup provided certain conditions are met.
"Since we decided in January 2017 that we should increase teams in 2026, and following a request from the 10 South American associations whether it is feasible to do this for 2022.
"We have the duty to look into it, 90 percent are in favour of an increase but it's not as easy as that. We have to analyse matters carefully and we are working closely with Qatar."
The move away from the traditional 32 teams which will see 80 matches instead of 64 - the notion was originally slated to come into effect for the 2026 tournament in North America - means one or more other countries will be asked to help Qatar stage the shortened 28-day event which is scheduled to kick off in November 2022.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman and United Arab Emirates are all potential options yet rancorous diplomatic disputes has led to the tiny Gulf state being politically isolated from many of its former allies.

'MORE THE MERRIER'

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will need to end their diplomatic blockade of Qatar launched in 2017 if they want to be involved, Fifa's feasibility study said.
"We know the situation in the Gulf region," added Infantino. "We are in the lucky position of being in football, and that means you can only care about football. I was pleased with the reaction of the Qataris. We don't want to regret not analysing the decision."
For the 2026 tournament in North America, 60 games will be held in the United States with Canada and Mexico getting 10 games each.
A similar division is anticipated for 2022, with Qatar retaining the bulk of the matches while Infantino moved to allay fears the increase in teams could dilute the quality of the tournament.
"The more the merrier," the Fifa supremo said.
A Fifa document on Thursday said an expanded 2022 tournament would use the same format planned for 2026, with the six regional confederations receiving the same number of qualifying slots allocated for the tournament in North America.
Fifa, meanwhile, have been told that the leading European clubs will boycott a Club World Cup expanded to 24 teams in 2021 which was also given the go-ahead at the meeting in Florida.
A 17-page report distributed to the 37 members of Fifa's ruling body calls for the new tournament to take place between June 17 and July 4 2021, replacing the Confederations Cup international tournament.
Infantino called the decision to move ahead with the plans an "important milestone for world football" and expects no problems moving forward.
"We should enjoy what is coming," he said.
But the European Club Association (ECA) said leading European clubs would boycott the event.
An ECA spokesman told AFP: "ECA clubs will not participate in the Club World Cup in 2021 and will assess participation in the Club World Cup in 2024."
There was also confirmation from FIFA that the video assistant referee system (VAR) will be used at the women's World Cup this summer.

Departing PFA chairman Ben Purkiss tells talkSPORT: ‘I NEVER had my eyes on Gordon Taylor’s job’

Departing PFA chairman Ben Purkiss tells talkSPORT: ‘I NEVER had my eyes on Gordon Taylor’s job’

Ben Purkiss has insisted his call for an independent review of the Professional Footballers̢۪ Association was never about his desire to usurp Gordon Taylor as chief executive.

Purkiss, the current PFA chairman, joined talkSPORT on Thursday to discuss the news that Taylor will step down after 38 years in charge when independent review of the union’s work and governance has been completed.

Taylor has faced criticism in recent years over his running of the organisation and his reported £2.3million wages.

Since being appointed chairman in November 2017, Purkiss has clashed with Taylor over the PFA̢۪s direction and the 74-year-old̢۪s future in the role and, at Wednesday̢۪s annual general meeting, it was confirmed a review would take place.

But it was also revealed that, along with Taylor, chairman Purkiss and the rest of the union̢۪s 13-strong management committee will also stand down when it is completed.

Serious questions have since been raised about why the man behind this much-needed reform has been forced out of his job.

And the right-back, who most recently played for Port Vale and Swindon Town, joined talkSPORT host Jim White on Thursday to have his say.

â€Å“People questioned my motivation for taking the stance that I did,” said the 34-year-old.

â€Å“I was asked the question whether I had my eye on £2.3million, and I certainly did not.

â€Å“I’m more than happy to agree to that [stepping down as well as Taylor] if it allays those fears and makes everyone have more confidence in me, in what I’m doing and how the review is going to progress.

â€Å“I want to see the review through and make sure there is someone there who can lead the evolution at the PFA.

â€Å“I don’t want to be seen to be trying to implement things for my own gain. It’s never been about me looking at how I can cement my role and position within the organisation, it’s been about trying to represent the members and do my best for players throughout the leagues.

â€Å“If it is a price to pay, then that’s fine, but I genuinely believe I’m trying to do my best in the role.”

It has been confirmed that none of the members on the outgoing committee will be able to apply for senior roles at the PFA for five years.

However, Purkiss refused to rule out running for chief executive one day and even offered his support to whoever is selected to succeed Taylor in the role.

â€Å“Obviously I would love to stay within the game in some capacity and I’d like to think I can influence and help players in particular,” he added.

â€Å“The chief exec job? You would never categorically rule that out, but at the moment the forefront of my mind is making sure I do this job properly and that we really get substantive change at the end of the review.

â€Å“I have invested a lot in the PFA.  I massively believe in players and the support they need and hopefully I will leave a legacy and give the PFA a real platform to build on.

â€Å“If an incoming chief exec wishes to draw on my experience or wants my assistance, I would obviously more than happy to assist in any way I possibly could.

â€Å“But if that’s not as chairman, that’s absolutely fine.”

Steve McClaren SACKED as QPR boss after just one win in last 11 games

Steve McClaren has been sacked as QPR manager, the club have confirmed.

The Hoops lie 17th in the Championship after slumping to a woeful 2-1 defeat at home to struggling Bolton on Saturday, their 11th loss in 14 league games.

QPR boss Steve McClaren has been axed by QPR after less than a year in charge

They have picked up just one league win since Boxing Day – against Leeds in February – with the worrying slump in form enough for QPR chiefs to call time on McClaren’s brief stint in west London.

McClaren, 57, was appointed as Ian Holloway’s successor at the end of last season, his second spell at the club having spent a brief period on Harry Redknapp’s coaching staff in 2013.

CEO Lee Hoos said: â€Å“Making a decision such as this is never easy, particularly when you are talking about someone as professional and dedicated as Steve.

â€Å“We are grateful to him for all his efforts during his time with us. It is well documented that we are in a period of transition as we work hard to make the club financially stable. With that comes challenges, not least the cutting of the wage bill while aiming to remain competitive.

â€Å“As we look to the future, and taking recent results into account, we feel now is the right time to re-evaluate where we are.”

DRAWS: 9

LOST: 21

WIN PERCENTAGE: 34.8%

Director of Football Les Ferdinand added: â€Å“Steve has worked incredibly hard during his time with us but as we start to make plans for next year we feel this change is necessary now, rather than wait until the end of the season, or risk having to make such a decision early in the new campaign.”

talkSPORT has learned that club chiefs expected a lot more from McClaren, who was expected to deliver a more exciting brand of football to his predecessor and lead the R’s to a top-half finish – both of which he failed to deliver.

That, combined with the club’s dreadful form over the last three months surprised the Rangers board, who thought they had turned a corner after a horror start to the season.

McClaren looked to have turned the corner at Loftus Road, but their form has been a disaster since the turn of the new year

The former England boss was in danger of losing his job after just four games as Rangers made their worst start to a league campaign in their history.

However, he then oversaw an impressive run which took them up to eighth in the table and on the cusp of the play-offs.

Since the turn of the new year the west London side’s form has been nothing short of a disaster though, including a run of seven straight defeats.

And with just a single league win in over three months, QPR chiefs ran out of patience with McClaren – deciding to end his reign at a board meeting on Monday with seven games left of the season.

Chairman Amit Bhatia said: â€Å“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Steve for his hard work during his time with us, and wish him well for the future.

â€Å“I would also like to thank our fans for their patience and unwavering support during what has been a very difficult run of results, at a time when the club faces well-documented challenges.

â€Å“We must now work towards ending this season positively and building for the future.”

John Eustace will take over first-team affairs in the interim period while QPR begin the search for a new permanent manager.
