David Seaman reveals how to save a penalty and explains why Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is Premier League’s best taker

Ex-England goalkeeper David Seaman has revealed the secret to saving a penalty – and explained why Eden Hazard is the modern game’s best taker.

The former Arsenal man made several high-profile saves from 12 yards during his playing career, most notably denying Scotland’s Gary McAllister and Spain’s Angel Nadal at Euro ’96.

Last night, Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris produced a huge stop to keep Sergio Aguero’s spot kick out during Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League.

And while most modern goalkeepers study previous penalty attempts and decide which way to go days in advance, Seaman left it to the last second.

“Whenever there was a penalty, I always used to think, ‘Here’s a chance at glory’,” he told talkSPORT.

“It’s the closest I would ever get to the feeling of scoring a goal.

“I didn’t do any homework on penalties. I used to just look at the run up.

“A good penalty taker will swap sides. Look at Matt Le Tissier, he always swapped sides.

“As soon as they put their head down, I would decide which way I went, so they couldn’t see which way I was going to go.”

This is what makes Hazard so prolific from the penalty spot, according to Seaman.

The Chelsea man locks eyes with the keeper, waits for him to move, before slotting the ball the other way.

And Seaman admits he would’ve struggled to keep the Belgian out.

“The best penalty taker nowadays is Eden Hazard – because he doesn’t look at the ball. He just watches the goalkeeper.

“It would be hard. You’d have to double bluff him or something like that.”
