Ex-Manchester United star Lee Sharpe urges club to sign Chelsea ace N’Golo Kante, but ditch Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic

Former Manchester United midfielder Lee Sharpe has urged the club to sign Chelsea star N’Golo Kante.

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has opted to play Jorginho in a deep-lying role at the expense of the France international.

Kante has played further up the pitch in a midfield three – and Sarri has been criticised for ‘wasting’ the two-time Premier League winner.

Sharpe, who made 265 appearances for United in an eight-year spell from 1988, wants his old club to land Kante this summer, while ditching Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

He told talkSPORT: “They have to go out and buy ready-made world-class players. They’ve got a few young players who are coming through, (Scott) McTominay looks really good.

“There are a few young players in the team so they need ready-made, experienced, world-class players to put them back on that sort of level and stage.

“I’m not sure it’s really worked out for Lukaku, a world-class centre-forward would be great.

“Defensively they look a little bit uncertain so maybe a centre-half. If I was at United, I’d probably look at swapping Matic, he’s been brilliant but he’s probably lost a yard.

“I’d go out and spend some money and get Kante because they don’t seem to fancy him at Chelsea.”

Manchester United have dropped out of the top four after losing two of their last three Premier League games.

But Sharp expects Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to comfortably beat West Ham on Saturday, live on talkSPORT.

He said: “It’s a massive game. After the Wolves defeat, they definitely need to win.

“They need to bounce back after Barcelona, although they’d be relatively happy being a goal down (heading into the Champions League quarter-final second leg) and limiting them to very few chances.

“West Ham are a funny side, sometimes they’re great and sometimes they’re totally average.

“I expect United to overrun them and come out comfortable winners. They’re desperate for the win now.”

Tottenham Hotspur needed something special against Huddersfield Town having made seven changes to the team which beat Manchester City in the Champions League.. It came in the most unexpected form, though, as Victor Wanyama shimmied his way around Ben Hamer before rolling the ball into the back of the net for the opening goal of the game.

‘Manchester United CAN’T drop David de Gea’, insists Ray Parlour on talkSPORT

Ray Parlour insists David de Gea is one of the world’s best goalkeepers and remains undroppable for Manchester United, despite his recent mistakes.

The Spanish glovesman was guilty of another howler that cost United a possible three points against Chelsea on Sunday.

David de Gea has come under fire for his performances

De Gea fumbled Antonio Rudiger’s speculative 35-yard effort and allowed to Marcos Alonso to fire home Chelsea’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

So often United’s saviour and Mr Reliable, the club’s Player of the Year for four seasons out of five has now made three mistakes that had led directly to goals in his last four games.

His recent mistakes, against Lionel Messi in the Champions League and Leroy Sane in the Manchester derby, have led to calls from some quarters for De Gea to be dropped from the starting line-up, with Argentine Sergio Romero waiting for his chance on the United bench.

But Parlour insists the Spaniard is still a world class keeper and he’s urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to stick with his number one.

“David de Gea has been magnificent over the last few seasons,” said the Arsenal legend on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“There has been many, many occasions where he has saved Manchester United.

“Go back to the Spurs game at Wembley – what a performance. He kept United in that game and obviously they won in the end, and it was because of De Gea.

“But recently in the last few games he has made some really bad mistakes.

“Everyone makes mistakes in games, forwards miss penalties or open goals, but when a goalkeeper makes a mistake quite often it’s a goal.

“I don’t think they should rest him. He’s massive for Manchester United and they’ve got to keep him.”

Parlour has also told United to resolve the uncertainly surrounding De Gea’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have triggered an extension to his contract which means his deal now runs until 2020.

But the ex-Gunner says the club should try to convince the Spaniard to pen a new deal.

He added: “I know Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to look at his squad in the summer and they need to bring more players in and need to get rid of quite a few players too, but surely David de Gea won’t be one of them.

“He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and they should try to get him to sign a new contract.”

Beating Manchester City not impossible: Mauricio Pochettino

Beating Manchester City not impossible: Mauricio Pochettino

LONDON • After surviving an early Sergio Aguero VAR penalty and top scorer Harry Kane's injury to beat Manchester City 1-0, Mauricio Pochettino challenged "spirited" Tottenham to finish the job in their Champions League quarter-final.
South Korea forward Son Heung-min took his chance well in front of 17,500 fans in the so-called Tottenham Wall to earn Spurs a slender first-leg edge 11 minutes from time in their new home, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Tuesday.
His much-maligned captain Hugo Lloris enjoyed a moment of redemption in a troubled campaign when he saved Aguero's kick after Danny Rose was adjudged to have handled Raheem Sterling's shot.
Pochettino was delighted with the display against the Premier League champions, but insisted the tie was still delicately poised.
"We showed great quality. We were all excited and motivated to play this type of game," he said.
"The energy was good, fantastic, the penalty save gave us a big lift. There are still 90 minutes to play and it's Man City. But, with the spirit we play, anything is possible."
The win was an unexpected twist after Kane, who has 24 goals this season, injured his left ankle in a tackle on Fabian Delph just before the hour. He is expected to have tests on the injury today, but Pochettino fears his star striker could miss the rest of the season.
City's first loss since a Jan 29 setback at Newcastle may not be fatal, but they will have to improve at home in the second leg to stop Spurs from reaching their first European semi-final since 1984.
Pep Guardiola said: "Nobody said it would be easy. We have to show what we can do the next game.
"It was a good performance, but that's the Champions League. We lost, we have the second game and we will see what happens."
There was a sense of deja vu as he opted for the same duo, Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan, with disastrous consequences in the 3-0 beating at Liverpool in the first leg of the last-eight clash last season.
Guardiola lost Bernardo Silva to a muscle injury during training on Monday and had to defend his "conservative" line-up:
 • Riyad Mahrez over Leroy Sane on the right.
 • Gundogan over Kevin de Bruyne, who was returning to form and fitness in an injury-hit season.
Said Guardiola: "I decided to play with two holding midfielders to be a bit more solid.
"Last season was much worse (against Liverpool). Except for a few chances conceded in set-pieces and some counter-attacks, we controlled the game (today).
"We played to score but couldn't. Spurs are a team that press a lot, but they couldn't do that especially in the second half when we arrived many times in the final third."

Penalties Hugo Lloris has faced and saved in all competitions this year against Leicester, Arsenal and now Manchester City.

Aguero's penalty miss on 13 minutes was a major momentum swing for City, the League Cup winners and FA Cup finalists who are in the hunt for four trophies.
There were no penalty appeals from City when Rose's arm was slightly raised for balance as the left-back slid in to block. But, after consulting the video assistant referee, Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers awarded the kick.
As Lloris plunged to his left for a superb save, it fuelled more debate over Uefa's tweaked handball rule. Its decree that effectively any contact between arm and ball in the box meant a penalty, with a "distance" caveat, has stirred criticism even before the law was applied to widespread derision here.
Pochettino said: "Maybe technically it was a penalty because it was handball, but we do not know the protocol. There are a lot of question marks. I think it's going to change the spirit of the game and I'm very worried about how it's going to work next season."

Celtic news: Lisbon Lion Stevie Chalmers dies aged 83, the club confirm

Stevie Chalmers, one of Celtic’s Lisbon Lions, has died at the age of 83, the club have announced.

Chalmers etched his name into Celtic folklore when he scored the decisive goal in the 2-1 win against Inter in the 1967 European Cup final at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon.

A statement from his family, issued via the club, read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stevie Chalmers, our loving father and devoted husband to Sadie. The Celtic legend was surrounded by family when he sadly passed away early this morning [Monday, 29 April).

Chalmers’ death comes a week after Billy McNeill, captain of the Lisbon Lions, also died.

The statement added: “In recent times Stevie endured the toughest of battles, but just as he approached every game in a green and white jersey, he tackled his long-term illness with much bravery and dignity.

“Stevie, first and foremost, was a family man to his loving wife Sadie; their children, Stephen, Carol, Paul, Ann, Martin, Clare, grandchildren, great grandchildren and wider family members.

“He felt honoured and privileged to have played alongside the Lisbon Lions, and this camaraderie and friendship carried on long after their playing days as the team became lifelong friends.

“Celtic was an integral part of Stevie’s life and he devoted much of his career to the famous Glasgow club. He was adored by Celtic supporters in Scotland and around the world, especially for his passion, loyalty and integrity.”

Chalmers scored 231 goals in 406 Celtic games between 1959 and 1971, with only Henrik Larsson (242), Bobby Lennox (277) and Jimmy McGrory (468) having scored more.

However, the goal in 1967 with just five minutes of the final remaining, ensured Celtic became the first British club to life the European Cup.

He very nearly didn’t make it as a professional, though, as he was struck by tuberculosis meningitis at the age of 20. He spent six months in hospital, but made a full recovery.

Chalmers left Celtic in 1971 and had spells at Morton and Partick Thistle before retiring in 1975.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “This is such terrible news, and on behalf of the club, I would first of all like to pass on my condolences to Stevie’s wife, Sadie, their children, Stephen, Carol, Paul, Ann, Martin, Clare, and their grandchildren.

“Stevie was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this desperately sad time.

“This is a particularly devastating time for the Celtic family, with the passing of Stevie Chalmers coming so soon after his friend and former team-mate, Billy McNeill. My condolences also go to the Lisbon Lions, already mourning the loss of their captain, and now grieving the death of another one of their own.”
