A run of just two wins from seven Premier League games has seen Solskjaer’s side drop from fourth to sixth.

And while the Norwegian has ruled out a title challenge next term, he has warned his players that their top-six place could be in jeopardy.

Solskjaer told Sky Sports: “You’ve got Leicester, Everton, Watford, probably Newcastle, you’ve got clubs that want to chase us.

“We have to make sure that we are the ones who chase those ahead of us.

“We have to make sure that we are getting closer and moving that way up the table and not looking over the shoulders because there are big clubs, good clubs wanting to chase that top six.”

Paul Pogba and David de Gea have been linked with moves away from Old Trafford this summer.

Pogba is reportedly wanted by Real Madrid, while De Gea, whose contract expires next year, is yet to sign fresh terms.

A clearout of fringe players is also set to take place at the end of the season.

Solskjaer added: â€Å“My job is to work for the club. I have to manage for the club, and manage the players, yes.

â€Å“You give people a chance, but sometimes, you’ve got to be ruthless and say, ‘Sorry but you had your chance.’ I’m not afraid to do that.”
