Conor Hourihane scored a superb first-half free-kick as the Republic of Ireland edged past Georgia 1-0 to claim their second Euro 2020 qualifying win.
Ireland, who had scraped their way to a 1-0 win over Group D minnows Gibraltar on Saturday evening, were more than value for the points as they won by the same score at the Aviva Stadium with the Georgians rarely looking like ending their wait for a win over the Irish at the 10th attempt.
Hourihane’s 39th-minute free-kick ultimately settled the game, although goalkeeper Darren Randolph had to make a good reaction save to deny Valerian Gvilia an equaliser and Jaba Kankava hit the post five minutes from time.
However, anything less than victory would have been harsh on the hosts, who rose to the occasion and turned in a stirring display which could and probably should have resulted in a much more convincing scoreline.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
Ireland fans showed their displeasure at John Delaney by throwing around 30-40 tennis balls onto the pitch.
During Mick McCarthy’s second homecoming at the Aviva Stadium, some fans decided to show their anger at Delaney’s appointment as FAI executive vice president.
More than a week ago, The former vice president of the Olympic Council of Ireland came under intense scrutiny after reports he had provided a €100,000 cheque to the FAI in April 2017.
The 51-year-old claimed loaned his employers the money “to aid a very short-term cash flow issueâ€.
And fans were clearly infuriated at the fact the Waterford-born official is still in a position of such high authority.
