Scott Brown has ‘nothing to defend himself for’ after being treated ‘disgracefully’ in Old Firm derby, says Celtic boss Neil Lennon

Celtic manager Neil Lennon insists Scott Brown has ‘nothing to defend himself for’ after being treated ‘disgracefully’ in last weekend’s Old Firm derby.

The Hoops captain was slapped with a Scottish FA charge for ‘not acting in the best of interests of association football’ during a 2-1 win over Rangers.

Brown was struck by Alfredo Morelos – who was sent off for his actions – and Ryan Kent during the game, before clashing with Andy Halliday at full-time.

Kent is facing a two-match ban, while Halliday was shown a second yellow card following a post-match confrontation.

Lennon told Celtic TV: “My players have been exemplary, absolutely exemplary, under immense provocation themselves.

“Scott Brown has nothing to defend himself for. I think his treatment on the pitch was nothing short of disgraceful.

“He has been elbowed, he has been hit in the face, but he takes it, stands up to it, and comes back for more. That’s the character of the man.

“You get the usual nonsense and trying to put the same eggs in one basket. We are totally exempt from any blame for this whatsoever.”

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who accused Celtic of playing the ‘victim card’, was offered a one-match touchline ban for comments he made to referee Bobby Madden after the game.
