The 44-year-old has previously played Down Under for North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory between 2009 and 2011, and said he was happy to be returning to Oz.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and am determined to bring success to a club that has such a proud history in the Hyundai A-League,” Fowler said in a statement on the club’s website.

“My family and I have already experienced living in Queensland, so I’m really happy to be returning and being part of the Brisbane Roar family.”

Fowler has been out of the game since 2012, when he retired as a player and left his role as player-manager of Thai club Muangthong United.

Over the past seven years, Fowler has been coaching at Liverpool’s academy programme.

Speaking of his first full-time managerial role, Fowler told a press conference he believed he was the “right man” for the job.

“I have worked really hard getting all my badges, so to just quash all the inexperience rumours, I’m experienced in terms of getting all my coaching hours in and this is where I want to be,” he said.

“I’ve been in football a long time. Obviously, this is my first big, big role and one I’m really looking forward to. I’m really excited.

“I was a player who was passionate, committed, I had that drive and I want to bring that type of player to Brisbane Roar.

“It’s a tough job, it’s a tough ask, but I believe I’m the right man to do that, bringing in the right player.

“Brisbane have had some fantastic years in terms of what they’ve won. The way they played football was really, really good, very easy on the eye, so of course I want to do that and I think a club the size of Brisbane deserve to be back at the top levels of Australian football – and we will be there.”

Brisbane’s final game of the season will take place at home on Thursday against Adelaide United, with Fowler confirming he will be in attendance.

On Tuesday, Craig Hope, the north-east correspondent for The Daily Mail, told talkSPORT that Magpies fans should be ‘cautious’ about Sheikh Khaled’s buyout claims.

It has also been claimed that he is yet to provide proof of funds to buy the Premier League.

However, ChronicleLive say the Bin Zayed Group are adamant it is a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’ they complete a £350million takeover.

And contrary to other reports, the group say they have provided proof of funds to relevant parties.

Newcastle fans are desperate for unpopular owner Mike Ashley to end his turbulent 12-year reign at St James’ Park.

On Monday, a statement released by the Bin Zayed Group said: “We can confirm that representatives of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan are in discussions with Mike Ashley and his team, about the proposed acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club.

“We view it as an honour to have the opportunity to build on the strong support, history and tradition of the club.

“We have agreed terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity.”

Newcastle are yet to comment on Sheikh Khaled’s proposed takeover.

Emery wary of Valencia's recovery potential in 2nd leg

LONDON ̢ۢ Given Arsenal's abysmal away form this term, with just one clean sheet on the road in the Premier League, it is understandable why Unai Emery is remaining notably cagey about reaching the Europa League final on May 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Despite beating Valencia 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final on Thursday, the Gunners manager admitted that the tie is still very much up for grabs as "the second leg is going to be very difficult and maybe different".
Alexandre Lacazette's brace and an added-time strike from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earned the hosts the advantage after Mouctar Diakhaby had given the Spanish LaLiga side an early lead.
But, as a former coach of Valencia, which is owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, Emery is keenly aware of the hostile environment his side will have to contend with in the reverse fixture at the Mestalla next Thursday.
The Spaniard said: "It's a good result, but I consider it 50-50 in this one. They are going to feel strong with their supporters there.
"Playing there after this result, the atmosphere is going to be a very, very tough against us. That's normal. They are one team with a habit of playing semi-finals and also with the possibility to come back from this result."
And Valencia coach Marcelino, whose side have never lost at home to the Gunners in three previous meetings, agreed that "at the Mestalla, we can hurt them".
The Spaniard said: "I don't think any Valencia fan will think they were particularly stronger than us. We are excited and optimistic. If we have our fans behind us and get things right, we can win next week.
"The result has been excessive. They have been very decisive. They had more success and effectiveness, we hope to have that little bit of luck and success in the return.
"The tie is not decided and, with our people, we are going to make things difficult for Arsenal.
"It (the result) puts us in a more complicated situation, but in no case takes away from our minds that we can go to the final. This helps us to believe in ourselves and to believe that we can win."
In Germany, Chelsea set a Europa League record of 16 successive matches unbeaten after a 1-1 first-leg semi-final draw at Eintracht Frankfurt, with a Pedro equaliser cancelling out Luka Jovic's opener.
While Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri's decision to name Eden Hazard on the bench raised eyebrows, the Blues dominated the second half, with David Luiz unlucky not to get the second goal after rattling the crossbar from a free kick.

Tottenham transfer news: Christian Eriksen and Fernando Llorente could make way for Andre Gomes and Ryan Sessegnon

Tottenham are to set have a busy summer in the transfer market with a number of players on Mauricio Pochettino’s radar.

Spurs have not made any additions to their squad since they signed Champions League hero Lucas Moura in January of last season, and, now that top four is secured and their new stadium is built, a big spend in the window is long overdue, while it is being reported the club have already concluded a deal for 15-year-old Norwegian goalkeeper, Isak Solberg.

But who could be on their way to the club? talkSPORT.com has taken a look at all the transfer gossip surrounding the north London outfit.

Andre Gomes, who has just enjoyed a solid season in midfield for Everton on loan from Barcelona, is one of Pochettino’s targets and a fee of £35m will reportedly be enough for the Catalan giants to part ways with the player.

The Sun report the two parties are ‘nearing an agreement’ and a deal for the playmaker could be concluded soon.

A deal is also said to be close for Fulham winger Ryan Sessegnon.

The youngster had a difficult season for the Cottagers as his side struggled on their return to the Premier League, but Lilywhite deal-makers have not been put off and still believe Sessegnon has the talent to excel at a higher level.

Gareth Bale is another player whose name is doing the rounds in the rumour mill and the Welshman has consistently been linked with a return to Spurs.

However, according to reports, if the 29-year-old was to return to north London it would be as part of a £10million season-long loan.

It has been said Real will take an offer where a club pays around £250,000-a-week for Bale’s wages – believed to be in excess of £600,000 – in addition to the £10m fee.

The idea of Spurs taking Bale permanently has been ruled out, while his pay packet will also prove to be an obstacle.

The player left Tottenham for Real in an £85m transfer in 2013 and, despite winning four Champions League trophies in his time there, he has been booed by his own fans.

Now it appears Zidane is doing everything he can to force him out.

Outs

Talks are still ongoing between the club and Christian Eriksen over a new deal and Pochettino is hopeful a new contract can be agreed.

The 27-year-old playmaker has one year left on a contract that earns him a reported £70,000-a-week.

“I hope and wish Christian can be with us in the future,” Pochettino said.

“I think Christian and us, we are so open to talk and we will see what happens. It’s a situation that’s a very special one and Christian is a special person. The timing for him or for the club to be agreeing something is maybe different to another player.”

Chelsea starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi will stay at the club and start ‘75-80 per cent of matches in the near future’, manager Maurizio Sarri has predicted.

The talented 18-year-old winger, who recently made his full England debut, is yet to start a Premier League game for the Blues despite increasing pressure from fans.

Hudson-Odoi is reportedly determined to leave Chelsea

His future at Stamford Bridge remains a constant source of speculation after Chelsea rejected several January bids from Bayern Munich, who are expected to renew their interest this summer.

The teenager is yet to agree a new deal with the west London club and his current contract expires next year.

He reportedly wants more assurances over playing time, and speaking ahead of Sunday̢۪s Premier League clash with Cardiff, Sarri offered some clarity on Hudson-Odoi̢۪s progress at Chelsea.

â€Å“I know very well the situation. Last season Callum was only 17 and he played three or four matches,” Sarri said.

â€Å“This season he is very young, at the moment he has played, I don’t remember, 19 or 20 matches.

â€Å“The evolution is the right one. Probably he will play 30 or 35 matches next season. With Callum we are in the right path.

Manchester United and Barcelona are also rumoured to be plotting summer bids for Hudson-Odoi, who Chelsea are desperate to keep.

Reports emerged earlier today suggesting the Blues are willing to offer the winger £100,000-a-week to persuade him to sign a new deal.

It is understood the club will refuse to sell Hudson-Odoi even if it means letting him leave for free when his contract runs out, and Sarri reaffirmed that view on Friday.

When asked if Hudson-Odoi will be a Chelsea player next season, he said: “I think so.
