Marcus Rashford has been ruled out of England’s opening Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montonegro due to injury.
The forward, 21, was a major doubt to face Czech Republic at Wembley on Friday after missing training at St George’s Park.
The Manchester United striker instead underwent a separate session indoors away from the squad, but England boss Gareth Southgate has now confirmed he will play no part in either match.
“[Rashford has] been with our medical team all week and we’ve tried to progress him but it’s clear he’s not going to be ready for our matches so we’ve sent him back,” Southgate said.
“We knew Marcus might not be ready so it’s a good opportunity for others.”
Rashford’s injury has paved the way for either Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi or Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho to make their first senior start – and Southgate has stated he will not shy away from handing either one of them their chance.
He said: â€Ĺ“I wouldn’t hesitate starting Hudson-Odoi or Sancho. They’re both ready. They’ve been exceptional in training.â€
Rashford’s injury is the latest in a string of set-backs for Southgate.
The England boss’ plans have already been hampered by a host of withdrawals – including John Stones, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fabian Delph and Luke Shaw.
