Everton fans angered as tower which features on club crest is vandalised in wake of Liverpool’s Champions League victory

Everton supporters have been left furious as the 232-year-old tower which features on their club crest has been vandalised with graffiti appearing to reference Liverpool’s Champions League final victory.

In the wake of the Reds’ triumph over Tottenham, individuals have painted the number ‘six’ on Everton Lock-Up in an apparent boast about Liverpool’s sixth European Cup success.

Evertonians were outraged to discover the ruination of a club symbol and blasted the ‘mindless’ people responsible.

The ancient building on Everton Brow, which dates back to 1787, was originally a lock-up where local drunks and criminals were taken by parish constables.

A depiction of the Grade II-listed building has appeared on the Toffees crest since 1938.

It is deeply interwoven in the club’s history and, in 2003, a plaque was added to the building stating the importance of its sporting association.

In 1997, Everton gave £15,000 to help renovate the structure and, in 2014, it was permanently illuminated blue.

The tower’s name is thought to originate from the English Civil War Siege of Liverpool in 1644.

While the building was erected 143 years after the battle, Everton Brow was where Prince Rupert and his Royalist army camped to prepare for the attack on the Parliamentarian garrison holding Liverpool Castle, which fell after a week of heavy fighting and the loss of 1,500 of his men.
