Manchester United face an intriguing prospect heading into Wednesday evening’s Manchester derby.

Win, and they likely hand a first ever Premier League title to fierce rivals Liverpool.

Lose, and the title probably stays in Manchester – at the home of Manchester City.

It is City who travel to Old Trafford tomorrow knowing a win will send them top of the table with just three matches left to play. They are guaranteed to win the Premier League by winning all of their remaining games, while Liverpool need City to drop points if they are to win their first league championship since 1990.

The trip to United is by far City’s toughest game of their run-in, so Liverpool fans are hoping the Red Devils do them a favour.

It’s unlikely United will just roll over when City rock up at Old Trafford, but some Red Devils supporters seem to hope their side will do just that.

Deciding between City and Liverpool as Premier League winners is essentially Sophie’s Choice for a United fan, through it appears a group would prefer Pep Guardiola’s side retain the trophy rather than it going to Anfield.

This is according to Kyle Walker, the Man City defender, who revealed he has been approached by United supporters willing City to win the league.

“United fans are in a difficult situation obviously,” Walker told the Telegraph. “When I’m out and about or walking my dogs, United fans are coming up to me saying, ‘We’d rather City win the league than Liverpool’.

“It’s strange to hear but I can assure you the United players aren’t going to leave a red carpet and say, ‘Go on City, score past us’.

“They’re going to make it difficult because it’s a game of football and they’re fighting for the top four as well so they need the points.”

As Walker says, United need the win just as much as City – though for different reasons.

The Red Devils are currently three points behind fourth place Chelsea in the race for a top four finish, and Wednesday’s match is their game in hand over the Blues.

A defeat to City would keep them three points off Chelsea, with the west Londoners travelling to Old Trafford on Sunday for a match that could all but end United’s top four hopes.
